A simple fixed GPS, to a Multi station Multi-screen integrated Radar, Chartplotter with Echosounding and full integration with all other on-board systems, it is all possible. Obviously once you need to connect 2, 3 or more pieces of equipment together, it all starts to get a bit more complicated.
Interfacing
So, what works with what? NMEA0183, NMEA2000, SimNet, Seatalk, Seatalk2, SeatalkNG, SeatalkHS and various others. What does work with what? Probably best left to a professional once you've gone beyond the basics. It is easy to create data loops which corrupt everything up.
Properly designed systems, installed and commissioned by trained, qualified engineers should be a priority to any seagoing skipper. Your systems have to be installed correctly to give you reliable operation when most needed, afterall, there are "no laybys at sea".
